A competing model in this class of printers is probably the Brother HL series although I have no experience with them. After using my ML-1740 I would upgrade to another Samsung laser printer in this series in a heartbeat. I've read complaints about the noise level when it's activated out of sleep mode for a print job but it's minimal in my opinion and really the least of my concerns with this product.
